THE FIRST CHRISTMAS SEAL

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

The 1907 the Red Cross TB Seal was issued by the Delaware Chapter of the American Red Cross. There were two types: Type 1 - "Merry Christmas," and Type 2 - "Merry Christmas / Happy New Year." This seal is a Type 1. The 1907 Red Cross TB Seal was designed by Ms. Emily P. Bissell.

Emily Perkins Bissell (May 31, 1861–1948) was an American social worker and activist, best remembered for introducing Christmas Seals to the United States.

In 1907, she was drawn to the cause of helping people with tuberculosis (TB).  She had already heard of an idea in Denmark in which people attached a special stamp to their mail, the proceeds of which would go to fight the disease.  She decided to introduce the same idea in Delaware. Her goal was to raise $300 for a local sanitarium, using a bright red stamp she designed herself.  She convinced local post offices to sell them for just 1 cent. This way, she believed, even the poorest people could help in the fight against TB.

Though the idea failed at first, Bissell was able to gain enough publicity from a Philadelphia newspaper to make $3,000, ten times the amount she originally hoped to get. Bissell spent the remainder of her life promoting Christmas stamps and helping to eliminate tuberculosis. She died in 1948. A public hospital outside Wilmington bears her name.

EXTENDED SERVICE CONTRACT (WARRANTY)

HELP
Cartoon_car : An illustration of a sad broken down red cartoon car Stock Photo

An Extended Service Contract is like extending a vehicle’s factory warranty.  Of course the question is, "should I get an extended service contract or not?"  It makes sense to get an extended service contract if you plan to keep your vehicle for an extended period of time or if you will be driving an above average amount of mileage.
Today’s vehicles are complex, computerized machines; even the car keys are mini computers.   This technology can result in very expensive repairs.   It seems that a vehicle’s biggest repair comes just after the factory warranty expires.
Northwest Fleet Lease has a plan available that will mimic the factory warranty.  We teamed up with Auto Services Company Inc. and we have been offering their plan for several years.  They have been in business since 1986 and their track record of customer service has been excellent.  Auto Services Company pledges to provide the highest quality service with consistency and integrity.  Plans are available for new and used vehicles.  In fact some plans are available for vehicles up to 10 years old with up to 140,000 miles.
Their factory type of coverage includes all items covered under the manufacturer’s original coverage, except for normal maintenance items.  Normal maintenance items not covered are as follows:  Tires, wheels, struts, shocks, brake shoes or pads, rotors or drums, belts, hoses, filters, fluids, lubricants, clutch, pressure plate or clutch release bearing and tune up items.
Other benefits in their plans include the following:
- $0 Deductible
- Labor is included in all plans
- Roadside Assistance (24 hours per day / 7 days per week)
- Rental Car Allowance
- Vehicles can be repaired by a new car dealer or any licensed shop
Auto Services Company (ASC) not only has a quarter-century of experience and superior financial strength, but is also insured by American Bankers Insurance Company, an ‘A’-rated, multi-billion dollar company recognized as a leader in the service agreement insurance industry.   For more information you can visit the ASC website:  www.ascwarranty.com.

HOW IMPORTANT IS YOUR CREDIT SCORE

A credit score is a measure of credit worthiness.  It reflects the ability to make good on a promise.  The higher your credit score, the lower your rate for mortgages, car loans, credit cards, insurance premiums, etc.  Landlords can also use your score to decide whether to rent to you.

Credit scores cannot be used, or requested, by employers to determine hiring or firing. Employers can, however, use information from credit reports but they have to ask your permission first.

There are three major credit bureaus; Experian, Transunion and Equifax.  The credit reports include your personal information, the credit lines you have open and your payment history.  The factors that affect your credit score are as follows:

1.  Payment history accounts for about 35% of credit score.  It's important to pay your bills.
2.  Credit utilization comprises 30% of credit score.  People with the highest scores tend to only be using 20 to 25 percent of their available credit.
3.  Length of credit history makes up 15% of credit score.  Credit scores favor long credit histories.  In fact, you need a six-month history of credit to produce a score.
4.  Credit mix makes up another 10% of credit score.  Multiple types of credit, such as mortgage, car loan and credit cards, are better than credit cards alone.
5.  Applying for new credit wraps up the last 10%.  A lot of new credit in a short period of time makes you more of a credit risk.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) provides the consumer with many rights.  In fact the FCRA entitles the consumer to a free credit report every 12 months from each of the credit bureaus.  You can access your credit report through; www.AnnualCreditReport.com.

For more information about the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) including consumer rights, go to: www.ftc.gov/credit.

1948 TUCKER TORPEDO

The 1948 Tucker Torpedo with three headlights.  One in the center.  The third headlight rotated in any steering direction to illuminate the path of a turn.  Even automotive wizards of that era stood in awe of Tucker’s innovations: seat belts, a pop-out windshield, a padded dashboard, reinforced frames, a cyclops headlight and a powerful engine and drivetrain. Almost all of them have since been incorporated into vehicles, (but not the third headlight).

MODEL T

Henry Ford did not invent the automobile.  He did however make it affordable to the average American.  He did this by creating the Model T and by perfecting the assembly line concept.  The Model T made it's debut in 1908 with a purchase price of $825.  Over 10,000 were sold in it's first year.  Four years later the price dropped to $575.  By 1914 Ford could claim 48% of the automobile market.

FIRST MASS PRODUCED AUTOMOBILE

Curved Dash Oldsmobile

The gasoline powered Curved Dash Oldsmobile is credited as being the first mass produced automobile, meaning that it was built on an assembly line using interchangable parts. It was introduced by the Oldsmobile company in 1901 and produced through 1907. It was a runabout model and had a top speed of 20 mph.  It could seat two passengers and sold for $650.
Over 19,000 vehicles were produced in the that seven year period.

COST OF NEW VEHICLES RISING

The average cost for new vehicles continues to rise.  The average cost has risen a total of $4,420 in the past ten years as shown in the illustration below.

The rising costs of new vehicles is a good reason to consider a used vehicle.  You can save thousands of dollars.  Let someone else pay the first and/or second year of depreciation.  And you can still get a vehicle with factory warranty remaining.

We lease both new and used vehicles.  Please contact me (Larry the Lessor) at 425-251-6000, or by e-mail:  larrya@nwfl.com

IT'S TAX TIME AGAIN

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR WAYS TO REDUCE THE TAX BITE?
LEASING MAY BE PART OF THE ANSWER.

Most business owners are looking for ways to reduce taxes and leasing may help.  Why not pay for your equipment and vehicles in a way that could reduce taxes!  The example below is intended to show the potential of how leasing can be advantageous.  It is not intended as tax advice.  We suggest that you discuss this illustration with your tax advisor to determine how it will affect your situation.

When a lease is structured correctly, it can provide a potential tax benefit.  That's because the lease payment is a fixed expense and it is paid out of gross profit (Pre-Tax Dollars).  The payments reduce the taxable gross profit; therefore the tax bite is reduced.

If a business entitiy is in the 34% tax bracket (Maximum Corporate Tax Rate), it will save 34 cents in taxes on every dollar it pays in the lease payment (Sales Tax included).

Here's the example:

In effect, Uncle Sam is picking up 1/3 of the total cost.  In addition to the potential tax benefit, a lease requires no down payment or large cash outlay.  Lease financing is 100% financing which means the business entity will preserve its cash and its lines of credit for its working capital needs.
